Toyama Knowledge

Toyama faces the Sea of Japan and is backed by the Tateyama mountains. It is famous for medicine sellers and the terrifying Tateyama Hell.

Historical Context

Tateyama was a center of 'Hell worship' where pilgrims sought salvation. The rugged terrain made it a training ground for ascetics.

Local Folklore

Jigokudani (Hell Valley) was feared as a literal entrance to hell. The Kutabe, a prophetic beast, also appeared here.
