Chubu Knowledge

Located in the center of Honshu, Chubu is known as the 'Roof of Japan' due to the towering Japanese Alps that cut across it. It is a diverse region hosting Mt. Fuji, historic post towns, and major industrial hubs like Nagoya. It serves as the bridge between the distinct cultures of East (Kanto) and West (Kansai) Japan.

History & Legends

Chubu has always been a strategic crossroads. Ancient highways like the Tokaido and Nakasendo passed through its rugged terrain, nurturing wealthy post towns. During the Sengoku period, it was the battleground for legendary warlords like Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, and Oda Nobunaga, whose ambitions shaped the unification of Japan.

Cultural Heritage

The region boasts a rich craft heritage, from woodwork in Takayama to gold leaf in Kanazawa. Its festivals are spectacular, featuring elaborate floats and fire rituals. Culinary specialties are diverse, ranging from Nagoya's hatcho miso dishes to the fresh seafood of the Sea of Japan coast.

Geography

Chubu is geographically rugged, containing the Northern, Central, and Southern Alps. It is often divided into three sub-regions: Hokuriku (Sea of Japan side), Koshin'etsu (Central highlands), and Tokai (Pacific side). This geography creates vast climate differences, from heavy snows in the north to mild weather in the south.
