Shiga Knowledge
Shiga encircles Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. It is a place of ancient temples and legends of water dragons and giant catfish.
Historical Context
Omi Province (Shiga) was a strategic crossroads. Mt. Hiei overlooking the lake is the birthplace of Japanese Tendai Buddhism.

Lake Biwa is home to the legend of the giant earthquake catfish (Namazu) and the Dragon King who gifted rice to heroes.
