Saga Knowledge
Saga is a land of pottery and ancient history, sandwiched between Fukuoka and Nagasaki. It is famous for the Karatsu Kunchi festival and its sea spirits.
Historical Context
Home to the Yoshinogari ruins, a massive Yayoi period settlement. The Nabeshima clan ruled here, famous for the 'Hagakure' samurai code.
Local Folklore
The coast is haunted by the Iso-onna (sea woman) and Darki spirits. Matsubara Shrine has a famous wooden Kappa statue.
