Okayama is the 'Land of Sunshine' and the setting for the Momotaro legend. Its sunny climate belies a history of battles with demons.

Historical Context

Ancient Kibi Province rivaled the Yamato court. The legend of Prince Kibitsuhiko defeating the demon Ura is the basis for Momotaro.

Local Folklore

Momotaro (Peach Boy) is the hero who defeated the Oni of Onigashima. The legend is alive at Kibitsu Shrine and Kinojo Castle.
