Nagano Knowledge
The roof of Japan, Nagano is renowned for its high peaks and deep spiritual history. It is a center of mountain asceticism and ninja legends.
Historical Context
Nagano hosts Zenko-ji temple, a major Buddhist center. The Togakushi area has a deep history of Shugendo and Togakure-ryu ninja traditions.
Local Folklore
Togakushi is famous for the frightening Kuzuryu (Nine-Headed Dragon) and the demoness Momiji. The mountains are believed to be inhabited by Tengu.
