Mie Knowledge
Mie is the spiritual heart of Japan, home to Ise Jingu, the most sacred Shinto shrine. Its forests and coastlines are steeped in kami worship.
Historical Context
Ancient Ise Province has been a pilgrimage destination for millennia. The Kii Peninsula's sacred routes cross through here.
Local Folklore
Ise Jingu is dedicated to Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. Coastal legends speak of the 'husband and wife' rocks (Meoto Iwa) and sea spirits.
