Kagoshima Knowledge
Kagoshima is the southern tip of Kyushu, dominated by the active volcano Sakurajima. It includes the mystical ancient forests of Yakushima.
Historical Context
The Satsuma domain was a powerful military state. Yakushima's cedars have stood for thousands of years.
Local Folklore
Yakushima is the home of Kodama (tree spirits). The islands are also known for the Kenmun, a playful tree spirit similar to a Kappa.
