Gunma Knowledge

Gunma is a hot spring kingdom surrounded by mountains. Its folklore is playful, featuring the shapeshifting tanuki, but also intense with volcanic deities.

Historical Context

Known as Jozuke in ancient times, Gunma has a strong silk-producing heritage. Morin-ji temple is the setting for one of Japan's most famous fairy tales.

Local Folklore

The legend of 'Bunbuku Chagama' at Morin-ji tells of a tanuki transforming into a tea kettle. Kusatsu Onsen is said to be a gift from the gods.
