Located at Honshu's northern tip, Aomori is a land of deep snows and ancient spiritualism. It is famous for the Nebuta Festival and mystical sites that act as bridges between the living and the dead.
Historical Context
Aomori hosts the Sannai-Maruyama Jomon ruins, showing ancient settlement. Its isolation allowed unique shamanistic traditions like the Itako spirit mediums to survive to the present day.
Local Folklore
The region is renowned for Osorezan (Mount Fear), a gateway to the afterlife. Local folklore also tells of Water Tigers (Suiko) and bird-spirits of the departed (Tatarimokke).
