Tohoku, encompassing the northeastern portion of Honshu, is a region renowned for its rugged natural beauty, deep winters, and the resilience of its people. It is a land of folklore, ancient spiritual practices, and rustic hot springs, offering a glimpse into a traditional Japan that feels worlds away from the neon lights of Tokyo.
Historically a frontier region known as Michinoku, Tohoku was the home of the Emishi people who resisted the Yamato court's expansion for centuries. It wasn't until the 9th century that central rule was fully established. In the 17th century, the powerful Date clan developed Sendai into a cultural and economic hub. The region has repeatedly overcome hardship, most notably recovering from the devastating 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Tohoku is famous for its vibrant summer festivals, such as the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri with its massive illuminated floats and the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri. Traditional crafts like Kokeshi dolls and lacquerware are highly prized. The region's folklore includes tales of the Namahage (ogres involved in New Year rituals) and Zashiki-warashi (child spirits bringing good fortune).
The region is dominated by the Ou Mountains, the longest range in Japan, which splits Tohoku into the Pacific side and the Sea of Japan side. This geography creates harsh, snowy winters in the west and cooler summers in the east. It is famed for sites like Matsushima Bay, considered one of Japan's three most scenic views.
Sakanoue no Tamuramaro builds Isawa Castle, effectively bringing the region under imperial control.
Date Masamune begins construction of Sendai Castle and the surrounding castle town.
A massive earthquake and tsunami devastate the coast, leading to a period of reconstruction and renewed regional pride.
