Overview

The beginning of military rule (Shogunate). Power shifted from the elegant court in Kyoto to the warrior class in Kamakura.

Significance

Rise of the Samurai and Zen Buddhism. A time of social upheaval and realism in art.

Yokai Context

As war became common, yokai became grittier and more grotesque. Tales of warrior ghosts and battlefield specters like the Gashadokuro have roots in the mass death of this and following eras.

The first military government (bakufu) is established in Kamakura.

Mongol Invasion Attempts

The Mongol fleet is destroyed twice by typhoons, called 'Divine Wind' (Kamikaze).
